This pan-European database functions as a portal to sponge projects
and measures from existing water retention databases (see logo’s
with information below) and new data that will be collected within
the SpongeBoost consortium (www.spongeboost.eu). As a
navigation guide it brings European data from different databases
together and provides a geographical overview of existing sponge
projects and measures. These projects and measures have in
common that they aim to restore or enhance landscapes’ natural
water retention (or sponge) capacity.
In this guide an overal distinction is made between large-scale
projects (e.g. the restoration of large nature reserves) and more
local measures (e.g. the creation of small wetlands or pools in
between agricultural fields). In case of large-scale projects, generally
a pallet of different restoration measures is implemented. In case of
local-scale measures, on the other hand, it yields a single type of
measure which is often implemented at various localities distributed
across a larger area.
